1   |   WHAT'S NEW AT THE "SAFETY DOCTOR?"

Hi friends and colleagues,

The “Doctor is Out” making safety presentations on “Safe and Secure Travels: Across Town or Across the Globe." Companies realize that their staff on the road can reduce their risks by taking precautions while they travel. Plus, organizations have been using this topic for their “spouse programs” at conventions.  Even in your community, there are safety precautions drivers can take to reduce the risks of accidents, car hijacking, purse theft, etc.

If your organization is looking for “hot safety topics” for keynotes, seminars or workshops, contact “The Safety Doctor” today.

2   |   PERSONAL SAFETY TIP

Spring rains on the roadways and balding tires cause skidding and hydroplaning of your vehicle.
Slow down when the roads are wet and take time to check the tread on your tires to ensure you are on safe ground.

3   |   WORKPLACE SAFETY TIP

Always make sure your name is on the BACK of your hard hat. This will make it easy for someone who may not know you to get your attention quickly, should they see a hazard to which you have your back turned.

5   |   SAFETY OBSERVANCES IN JUNE

June is National Safety Month - This Year's Theme: "CRASH - FREE JUNE!"
National Safety Council

June is National Safety Month, and this year's theme is "Crash-Free June." Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of injury death in America, with more than 44,000 deaths in 2002, and the leading cause of workplace death, with 2,200 deaths in 2002. More than 3 million Americans are injured annually in motor vehicle crashes, and those crashes cost society $242.7 billion a year.

6   |   MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT STATISTICS

The Problem
How long does it take you to brew a full pot of coffee in the morning? Ten minutes?  Fifteen minutes?  According to statistics, one person every 12 minutes dies from a motor vehicle related accident.  That’s 5 people an hour, 120 people in a day, 840 a week, 3360 a month, and roughly 40,000 in one single year.  Out of those 40,000 fatalities, 17,400 are due to driving under the influence of alcohol, 12,000 are due to speeding, and 11,000 are attributable to teenage drivers.  Think about it for a moment while you sip your bold breakfast blend; every 12 minutes someone dies.  This doesn’t even take into account how many are injured on an annual basis (that’s about 3 million, or roughly 6 people every minute).

The Solution
Awareness is the first step.  Statistics help to illustrate just how severe the issue of motor vehicle accidents really is, and through such displays helps to educate the public on the need for teaching and enforcing driving safety principles.  Action is the next step.  Take the time out to let a loved one know how much they mean to you, and that their driving safely is important to you because you value their life.  Similarly, when in the workplace, it is an employer’s responsibility to create a safe environment for their employees to work in; this includes jobs that require the transportation of goods and services via trucks and automobiles.
